Silicon Valley is an odd place..

This is the SECOND time I found a computer sitting literally outside my door. This one, a NEC Ready 9522, was in much better physical shape than the prior HP which, as previously eluded, had no case, but was a much better machine. The HP was sitting just a bit away, this NEC was right beside my window, and a bit damp – I didn’t see it until after the spriklers went off.

This is a P100 and had an ancient BIOS revision which only allows 2 gig disks. I’ve since found an update, and it applied, despite being for a different model with a similar motherboard. I put the network card and second disk in to have some splace to play with should the primary fail – but all in all, iI’ve got it stable. The old PIIX controller won’t do DMA, and of course, neither will the disks, so I have to force-downgrade the driver in the generic kernel. The internal ISA rockwell modem is a write-off; I have no idea what the jumpers are, it has no discernable information – is not the default 9522 modem, and causes the BIOS to throw errors no matter the position.

Once i get it broken in and tested for a few days, I’ll most likely donate it to the local animal shelter (They have a nearby secondhand store, and I’m sure they could get a few bucks for it. :))

If you’re interested, here’s the dmesg:

Wheeee. Now if they’d only drop some “Ultimate in Cool” job positions upon my doorstop.. ;)
