Six degress of Kevin… Mitnick?

Interesting little worthless tidbit, Kevin Mitnick, in his heyday, circa ‘95, apparrently portbounced off of a host of a former employer of mine, using a coworker’s account. D’oh.

Ok, fine, so this isn’t exactly six degrees, even given a rather liberal amount of padding – I think I started Internex Q3-Q4 ‘97. Gaia was decomissioned about six months after my hire date, though and if memory serves, was 6 hops from my desktop XTerm at the time. Wooo, freaky

I was allowed colocation there, and I had 6 machines on 10mbit for free – ah, that was nice while it lasted; plus it made the racks look full! They were: “Perfringens, Adipocere, Scabies, Ichthyosis, Panniculitis, and Mastocytosis.” Honestly, I forget why they were named for skin diseases, but I’ve always had a warped sense of humor. That, and having an MRTG monitoring system named ‘scabies’ always made me giggle.

From a brief whois on Internex’s old AS2828:

Concentric Network Corporation acquired InterNex Information Services on 2/5/1998.
NextLink Communications acquired Concentric 6/16/2000.
NextLink/Concentric renamed XO Communications on 9/25/2000.

These dates are slightly off, and seem to be directly in relation to the date on the paperwork – Concentric was moved into my building in Janurary, already, and by June, we were mostly tranisitioned to the Parkmoor facility.
